    The Heard Museum will host a Native Jewelers Society (NJS) Demonstration Workshop and Emerging Jewelers Market on January 7th, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Five NJS artists, including Darryl Dean Begay, Philbert Begay, Gene Billie, Ric Charlie, and Ray Scott, will demonstrate various techniques and topics such as: overlay technique, stampwork, fakes and frauds, and more. NJS workshops focus on providing a greater appreciation and understanding of all native jeweler’s skills, techniques, and the time needed to create high quality, hand-made work.

Tips for attending shows-planning ahead?

 

  • Get rest the night before so you can be at your best to sell
  • Get your sales pitch ready- be able to speak about your work to engage your customers
  • Create a checklist well in advance (They have apps for that now (Google keep, Evernote)
  • Cloth/ display
  • Business cards
  • Pics/photo album of previous work Camera- Good idea to take photo of client wearing item they bought for your records and memory
  • Mirrors Cords- if you're in a show that allows you to set up with lights - Pliers and extra findings
  • Sand paper Polishing cloth
  • Hammer (Especially if settup canopy)
  • Rain coats n plastic cover up 4 table
  • Receipt book
  • Credit card gadgets- Square etc...
  • Be on time and stay until the end
  • Be professional, and communicate

Avoiding Fraud

 

- Avoid using checks

- If you must take a check, get a valid phone #

- ask to see drivers licence and make copy, take photo.

- Some credit card services also carry check reader's too.
